We had our first circle on Friday during mentor and it was beautiful. Many of our students gave bouquets to their peers for their acts of kindness in the service of belonging and generosity. We also had bouquets for Mastery for students who are collaborating in classes and experiencing positive results. It is nice to see students settling in to classes.
Picture Re-takes Monday, Feb. 9
We have approximately 12 new students this semester, as well as students who missed getting school pictures in first semester. Edge Images will be in on Monday morning to take pictures for those who missed them or if someone had a picture and didn't like it. These images are used to provide a digital ID for students, and becomes their ID picture in PowerSchool. Even if you don't want school pictures, it is really valuable for us to have a current picture of all our students.
Meet the Teacher and Parent Meeting Tuesday, Feb. 10 starting @ 6:00pm
We invite you to Alternative High School for an opportunity to meet your child's teachers. We will start in a circle in the gym, then do a short timetable rotation so you can meet each teacher in your child's day and learn more about what they are learning, how to communicate and conditions for success.
Meet the Teacher is NOT Parent Teacher Student conferences. There will not be opportunity for individual conversations about students. PTS conferences are March 20.
If you have questions about your teen's classes, please reach out to your mentor or directly to the teacher.
School Council/Parent Association Meeting Tuesday, Feb. 10 @ 7:00pm (right after Meet the Teacher)
We have our first parent meeting of 2026 on Tuesday, February 10 following Meet the Teacher. We hope you can join us in person at the school or online in Microsoft Teams .
This meeting will be an opportunity to provide feedback on Alternative HS School Development Plan and Fees.
Emergency Response Planning
Each school is responsible to prepare an emergency response plan, as well as to practice fire and lockdown drills each school year.
Your teen may have told you that we had a lockdown on Friday morning that was unexpected. Usually we plan with Calgary Police carefully and take time to prepare students in advance. There was a miscommunication about the date of our lockdown, but when we checked in with classes, everyone felt they were prepared. I am proud of how our students and staff handled what could have been a stressful experience. If you have questions about our emergency response planning, please reach out to Principal Tracy, tadalton@cbe.ab.ca.
Planning for 2026-27
Students will be working with their mentors to consider their future goals in order to make a realistic plan for graduation and beyond. Once students have chosen their courses, parents will have an opportunity to review their choices and ask questions. Students will be inputting their choices after Family Day. We will notify parents when they can login to PowerSchool to view student course choices for next year.
Any students considering the Career and Technology Centre for next year, or tranferring back to their designated school should notify thier mentor. The High School Transfer process has started and will continue until Spring Break. After that time it is more challenging for students to move schools.
