Happy New Year Alti Families!

I hope your break has been restful and fun.  We are excited to see our students back in the building Monday morning at 8:55am. With the return of Winter, please ensure your child has appropriate warm gear as they travel to and from school.  We have extras at school should they need.

January is an  unusual month in high schools as students attend a mix of regular classes and exams. The January schedule is available on our website. This week we have two modified schedule days (Wednesday and Thursday) where only students who are writing exams should be at school.  All of our staff will be involved in supervising and supporting students during exams.

Monday, Tuesday and Friday are regular school days.

Diploma Exams

On Wednesday and Thursday our English 30 and Social Studies 30 students will be writing Part A (written) of their diploma exams.  These exams are set by Alberta Education, are mandatory and are worth 30% of a student's final grade. Brett and Henna have offered students opportunities to practice in the digital environment and have explained to students the rules of the exams.

  • students must be on time (exam begins at 9:00am).  Students may not leave before 10:00am, and no students will be allowed to enter after 10:00am.
  • if a student is sick on an exam day, they will require a doctor's note to delay writing the exam until April or June.  Please contact our office if your child is sick on a diploma exam day.
  • students must have picture ID with them.
  • all students are permitted to use up to double time (6 hours) for their Part A exams.  Other accommodations are permitted only if they are identified on a student IPP AND students use them throughout the school year.
  • students will NOT be allowed to bring their cell phones, smart watches or any other devices into the exam. They will not have access to personal music during the exam, but may ask for the audio file of the exam or for ambient noise (both of which are provided in the digital environment by Alberta Education).

You can find more information about Diploma Exams along with practice materials at Alberta Education

Modified Schedule Wednesday and Thursday

Our grade 10 & 11 Social Studies and ELA students will be writing their Part B (multiple choice) exams on Wednesday and Thursday. Brett, Kyra and Henna will ensure students understand what they need to do to prepare for these exams.

Only students writing exams should be in attendance on Wednesday and Thursday.

Semester One Transition

Students will be finishing up their semester one classes over the next two weeks.  The last day of official classes is January 19 and teachers have to report final grades by January 25.  Attendance and participation in classes are the single most important way to ensure your child successfully completes their courses this semester.  Students who do not receive a passing grade will need to repeat the course. Mentors will be working with individual students to finalize semester two classes.

Looking forward to seeing everyone Monday!
