November has arrived! We are approximately 25% through the school year!
In the spirit of Belonging, we had such a great Spirit Week last week and a fun day on Friday with costumes, games and candy! Community celebrations are such an important part of creating a safe and inclusive environment. We are proud of how our students celebrated each other's creativity and self-expression!
Photo Re-takes TOMORROW November 2
For those students who missed getting a school photo in September, or those who were unhappy with their photo, Edge Images will be at Alternative HS Monday morning to take pictures. It is important for students to have a photo as this is the picture that appears in PowerSchool and on the student school ID card, which they use for a variety of reasons inside and outside of school.
Attendance Matters
Attendance remains the single most important determinant of success for students. We ask our students to commit to at least 80% attendance. Engagement in learning and successful demonstration of knowledge and skills depend on consistent attendance. Even if students are late, there is great benefit in getting to school and to class when they can, as opposed to missing the day. Students will always have to make up what they miss, which can cause anxiety. Please connect with your child's mentor, or call the office if they are going to be late, absent, or need to leave early.
We recognize the challenge that many of our students have in navigating city transit in cold weather. We will warmly welcome them when they arrive. Please reach out to your mentor if your child needs warm winter gear.
Term 1 Report Cards November 9
Marks will be turned off this week so teachers can input grades and comments.
Term 1 ended on Oct. 30. Only a few of our courses are single term, 3 credit, but for those that are, a final grade for those students will be calculated based on work completed by Oct. 30. This also means that students may have a new course second term. They can check PowerSchool to see what course they have next. Students in semester-long courses will also receive a mid-term grade and comment based on work completed by Oct. 30. It is important for students to stay current in their learning. Reach out to your mentor if you have questions.
Report Cards will be viewable online on November 9.

Gentle Phys Ed to Bird Sanctuary Wednesday, Nov. 4
We postponed our trip to the Bird Sanctuary last week due to forecast snow. We will be heading there this week to explore the IndigiTRAILS walk. Principal Tracy will have the app on her phone, but students are welcome to download the app ahead of our walk if they would like to follow along. IndigiTRAILS is a free app available on Apple and Android devices. The app uses GPS or location services to allow audiences to take part in digital art galleries and other future activities within Calgary.
Winter Plant Fundraiser
Our annual plant fundraiser has started! Growing Smiles plants are high quality and affordable, and the proceeds go to support student initiatives in our school. Please consider purchasing your winter greenery through our fundraising website. Delivery will be Dec. 10 & 11 to Alternative High School. Please share this opportunity with friends and family.
