What a great first week of learning last week! It was nice to welcome our new students alongside our veteran students. In the spirits of Belonging and Generosity, we hope our returning students remember what helped them to feel welcomed when they started at Alti and take care of our new students.
School doors open at 8:15am. Please work with your teen to have them arrive no earlier than this.
Tuesday, Sept. 8 (TOMORROW) is Picture Day!
All students will have a photo on Tuesday morning. It is important for students to have a photo as this is the picture that appears in PowerSchool and on the student school ID card, which they use for a variety of reasons inside and outside of school. Please let your mentor know if pictures are challening for your teen and we can work with them to make it as comfortable as possible.
Friday, Sept. 8 Guest Teacher
Mentor time on Fridays is dedicated to build community and foster a sense of belonging for all our students. This Friday we are honoured to have the guidance of Knowledge Keeper Autumn Whiteway to share with our students and learn about the Plains Peoples' Winter Counts. Students will explore and develop their own Winter Counts through hands-on art making for the afternoon. We are excited to have an opportunity to learn and walk together in the spirit of reconciliation, strengthening the spirits of Belonging and Generosity. You can learn more about Autumn Whiteway's art on her website.
As part of Friday, students who wish wil lhave the opportunity to learn about Smudge and to participate in smudge. Please refer to this letter to learn more about how smudge is offered at Alternative High School. Smudge_letter_26-27.pdf
MyCBE and Demographic Forms
Parents and guardians should have received an emai this week from CBE asking them to go online and update their demographic forms. These forms are required by Alberta Education for compliance. Please go online and complete them at your earliest convenience. Reach out to your mentor or Jodi (in the office) if you have questions. If you have not created an account for PowerSchool, you can find out how here: https://support.cbe.ab.ca/mycbe. You can see your child's attendance and grades, as well as pay fees and sign up for Parent Teacher conferences in this portal.
Parents please also subscribe to school emails as this weekly message is our primary form of communication.
Lunch and Snacks
Pack a healthy lunch and snacks. Although we have in the past been able to offer food for breakfast and snacks, as well as sandwiches for lunch for those who need them, this year our budget will be limited. Brown bagging for kids provides funding for the school to offer supplies for students who need to have a sandwich at lunch. Please reach out to your child's mentor if your child would benefit from this service. There will be light breakfast items available prior to 8:45am for those student who might need them. Tracey's room will be open during morning break and at lunch and she will have snacks available for students who may have forgotten to bring food from home.
Please also send a reusable beverage cup good for both hot and cold. We are no longer providing cups to students on a regular basis as they often leave them in lockers or around the school. We do not have a way to mass clean re-usable cups at school. Encourage your child to wash out their cup each night at home. If you have extra re-usable cups and would be willing to donate them for student use, please drop them off or send them with your child.
If you have extra re-usable cups or clean water bottles at home, we would welcome them to have extras for students.
